I am showing a large selection of my work in a solo exhibit at the Caldwell Lake George Library September 3-October 31. All works will be available for purchase from the show. I'll also have art prints for sale of a few of my Lake George scenes. The library hosts a Meet the Artist reception on Wednesday, September 18 at 6pm. Looking forward to hanging out that evening and talking a little about my work. Located at 226 Canada Street in Lake George Village, the library is a very active hub for the community, with art classes, special author events, kids activities. The library partners with Lake George Arts Project to present exhibits by regional artists that change out every two months; both organizations split a 25% commission on all art sales, helping to support their respective programming, with the artist receiving the remaining 75%. "River Power", portrays the rush and power of the Hudson River's high waters in spring, spilling over the dam at Glens Falls, crashing over the rocks, sending mist up in the air. It's one of my favorites painted this year because of the challenges the scene presented: the subtle shifts in values of the water, soft and hard edges, color balance in the highlights and shadows, and those wonderful shapes in the rocks. There are pieces of the painting that just came together so wonderfully on their own, That is the beauty and joy of painting in watercolor - letting the medium and the water work together to make magic while guiding a little of that accidental process into a painting that celebrates water in a way that only transparent watercolor can. I'm so pleased that "River Power" watercolor was selected for the Land & Light & Water & Air exhibit at Bryan Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont from August 28 to December 22. Opening Reception takes place on Thursday, September 5, 4-7pm. Land & Light & Water & Air is Bryan Gallery's annual signature exhibition featuring traditional and contemporary landscapes of Vermont, New England and the Northeast by artists from all over the country. River Power, watercolor 10"x14" framed to 16"x20", $720.
![]() All framed and ready to get packed up, Meander will be shipped out to New England Watercolor Society’s Celebrating New England exhibit in Plymouth, MA. Super nice to have my new watercolor painting accepted into a NEWS show after joining this established long-standing watercolor society earlier this year, part of my ongoing effort to seek out more exhibit opportunities farther into New England and the Northeast. Exhibit opens July 12, runs until Sept 4 in the New England Watercolor Gallery at Plymouth Center for the Arts. There is a reception on August 15, 6-8pm, but I won't be able to get to it since I'm teaching a watercolor workshop up in Ticonderoga that afternoon (maybe if I pop into the Star Trek museum up in Ti, they can beam me over to Plymouth after my workshop, ha ha!). With this painting, I worked to capture the feeling of a hazy summer day on a meandering mountain river: the air and how it affects the light as the calm waters wind into the marshy areas and the colors and shades become more subtle in the distance. The painting measures 11"x15" and is framed to 16"x20" (outside dimensions of frame are 18.75"x22.75"), available in the show for $690. "Early Spring Mosaic" Juried Into 43rd Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolor5/15/2024 **Delighted to report that this painting has sold in the Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors at The View in Old Forge, NY.**
I received great news that my newest painting, Early Spring Mosaic, was accepted into the 43rd Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors. I'm really excited about having a piece in this show again this year; last year was my first acceptance into the show, after many prior attempts. This prestigious exhibit showcases works in watermedia from all over the US and is beautifully displayed every year at the View Arts Center in Old Forge, NY. This year's show opens on August 2 with a big reception and awards ceremony and runs to September 28. Early Spring Mosaic was a bit of an experimental piece for me. I focused on exploring the push and pull of negative and positive spaces with this early spring woodland setting. The painting is as much about the marks as the subject matter; line work was done in concentrated transparent watercolor, using a quill pen. The painting measures 17"x11" and is framed to 24"x18". Sometimes I photograph different stages of a painting I'm working on - it's kind of interesting to look back at the images to see where various areas of the painting came to life.
The colors in the 3rd and 4th images are not accurate on the right hand side of the painting; the lamp at my painting table reflected on the still wet paper and made the images look a lot more golden brown than the painting really is. Final result is the image at the bottom; the colors in the image more accurately match the actual painting. |
