The first part of the New Year has me busy in my studio, finishing up commissions and getting a few new pieces ready for a group exhibition I'm organizing at LARAC Mountain Gallery opening February 23. Each of the artists will show 6-8 works exploring the theme of Here & There, inspired by motifs/subjects/scenes both close to home and farther away. I'm excited to exhibit with these nine fantastic artists: Ann Larsen, Gary Larsen, Sue Beadle, Ron Mattia, Jill Murphy, Cindi Handy, Pamela Stendardi, Eden Compton, and Fred Holman. The Opening Reception is on Friday, February 23, starting at 5pm at LARAC Mountain Gallery, 21 Bay Street, Glens Falls, NY. Entrance to the gallery is actually on Maple Street facing City Park and Crandall Public Library. Gallery is open Wednesdays-Saturdays, 10am-3pm. In addition, a Closing Reception will be celebrated on March 29, commemorating both the end of the exhibit and the end of LARAC’s time in this additional gallery space at 21 Bay Street, Glens Falls, NY. The theme of Here & There is explored in each artist’s selection of works, interpreted literally or metaphorically; some pieces are inspired by motifs or scenes close by, while other pieces are inspired by subjects or concepts farther afield. The works in the exhibit offer visitors to the gallery a variety of genres, stylistic approaches, and mediums to take in. Each artist demonstrates a recognizable artistic voice, honed after years of devotion to their art practice. With the closure of LARAC’s Mountain Gallery, I will be switching gears a bit, going back to working at LARAC’s main location, at 7 Lapham Place in Glens Falls, NY, helping the organization continue to expand its programming and workshop experiences. More about LARAC programs, exhibits, festivals, and workshops can be found at www.larac.org. Here & There Artist Statement Much of my work is deeply inspired by the aesthetics of the natural elements and landscapes of the Northeast. Although I paint representationally, I approach my work with an eye to more abstract qualities, harmonizing atmosphere and movement with form, color and line. Bringing what I've learned in painting the light, water, rocks and trees of our region to understanding and interpreting similar elements in places further away is excellent practice, challenging me to keep learning and growing as an artist. It is one thing to simply depict a mountain or a lake or a tree or a building, but to truly integrate the light and atmosphere of a painting, to provide a sense of place and time, the emotion of the moment, that is the elusive quality I will keep chasing the rest of my painting life Below are all the works I will be exhibiting in Here & There.
